One thing we didn’t comment on in the article is an interesting <strong>shift regarding the spiritual practices of PAOC credential holders according to their education levels.</strong>
<p>Back <strong>in 1985/86</strong> Carl Verge concluded that “those clergy of the PAOC who have <strong>completed a graduate degree</strong> in theology or religious studies are <strong>less committed</strong> <strong>to a number of Pentecostal … practices</strong> than those who have completed only a Bible College education.”</p>
<p>This <em>might</em> make one think that if you go to seminary, you go to the cemetery—that is, graduate level theological education will kill you spiritually!</p>
<p><a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-1480" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1" alt="ONELG10687-002-CanadaGenWeb-Cemetery-Ontario-Elgin" width="300" height="225" loading="lazy" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?w=768&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=760%2C570&amp;ssl=1 760w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=518%2C389&amp;ssl=1 518w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=82%2C62&amp;ssl=1 82w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=131%2C98&amp;ssl=1 131w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/onelg10687-002-canadagenweb-cemetery-ontario-elgin.jpg?resize=600%2C450&amp;ssl=1 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a></p>
<p>BUT…that doesn’t seem to be the case . . . at least not among PAOC credential holders.</p>
<p>Even in 1987, Verge noted that the differences between the two groups were not significant.</p><div class="mailmunch-forms-in-post-middle" style="display: none !important;"></div>
<p>Dr. Stewart and I found that <strong>in 2014</strong> <strong>PAOC credential holders who had a master’s degree</strong> (or higher) in religion/theology on average reported:</p>
<ul>
<li>spending <strong>more</strong> time each day <strong>praying</strong> (a couple minutes a day more <img src="https://s.w.org/images/core/emoji/17.0.2/72x72/1f642.png" alt="🙂" class="wp-smiley" style="height: 1em; max-height: 1em;" /> )</li>
<li>spending <strong>more</strong> time each day reading their <strong>Bible</strong></li>
<li><strong>fasting more</strong> for spiritual reasons (on average 6X more each year)</li>
<li>praying or singing in <strong>tongues more</strong> in a year (although the numbers were almost the same here)</li>
</ul>
<p>So, what does all this mean? <strong>If you pursue graduate level theological education, you are not likely to die spiritually.</strong></p>
<p>U<a href="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?ssl=1"><img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-1494" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=300%2C172&#038;ssl=1" alt="6044217_orig" width="300" height="172" loading="lazy" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?w=1100&amp;ssl=1 1100w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=300%2C172&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=768%2C439&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=1024%2C586&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=760%2C435&amp;ssl=1 760w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=518%2C296&amp;ssl=1 518w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=82%2C47&amp;ssl=1 82w, https://i0.wp.com/www.andrewkgabriel.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/05/6044217_orig.jpg?resize=600%2C343&amp;ssl=1 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /></a>nfortunately, those with a master’s degree are also likely to <strong>preach for 2 minutes longer</strong> than those with an undergraduate education. Ha!</p>
<p>So, go ahead, get yourself more edumacated (consider <a href="http://www.horizon.edu/seminary/">Horizon Seminary</a>). Just be careful that you don’t start preaching longer.</p>
